Tape-in hair extensions are becoming increasingly popular in Toronto, as a way to temporarily increase the length and add some volume to your hair.

What are tape-in hair extensions?

Tape-ins are a form of hair extensions that are made of natural hair that actually get taped into your existing hair. Sounds scary, right? Well it’s not! Think of a clip-in extension – it’s about 1-2inches wide with double sided keratin tape. They are applied by placing one piece on a section of you natural hair. From there, we’ll pull the strand up, exposing the sticky side, and will place the second piece, to create a sandwich with your natural hair. Typically, the average head will use about 100 grams of hair which is approximately 20 “sandwiches” – or 40 separate pieces of tape-in. These pieces are placed roughly in the same places that clip-in hair extensions would go. After they’re placed — Ta-Da! You’ve got yourself some beautiful tape-in extensions!

Pros and Cons

Just like with anything, there are some pros and cons to getting tape-in hair extensions.

The Pros of Tape-In Hair Extensions

You’ll have long and thick hair, obviously! You may also decide if having this long hair is something you’ll want to aspire to after you get them removed. Tape-in hair extensions are made with real hair, so you won’t have to worry about damaging them with heat at all. Overall, you’ll be happy for your long mane.

The Cons of Tape-In Hair Extensions

They’re not the cheapest thing ever. Depending on where you go, the first time installation can run up to $900 at other hair extension salons in Toronto but the good news is that ours start at $270  and that includes application of the hair extensions and blending them into your own hair. Another downer, for you ladies who like to hit the snooze button, you will have to spend longer on blow drying and/straightening if that’s something you do on a regular basis. You’ll also be limited to hair styles since the extensions can be kind of invasive.

How long do tape-in hair extensions last?

Since two of the extensions are actually attached to each other and not just your scalp like many other extension types – it doesn’t allow for a long period of wear like fusion or micro-ring. Traditional extensions last 3-4 months before a re-application is needed, whereas tape-ins will need to be removed or touched up after 4-6 weeks. Tape-in hair extensions can be reused 3-4 times before needing to order a new set.

Tape-in hair extensions are definitely something worth thinking about if you want a long and beautiful mane. They are fairly easy to keep up with and offer stunning results
